soilders experience
The experience for German soldiers was as if they were stuck in a metal box without showers for several weeks and with the threat of being blown up. The Americans experience was close to hell. They were constantly being attacked by U-boats and many other war machines, sometimes without prior knowledge of an attack. Bombs were dropped all around them and torpedoes rocketed from all directions.
“Here was death, and we were throwing death back to meet it.” American Soldier, Attack on an Arctic convoy, 1942.
“The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” Winston Churchill.
